Roscommon County Council is running a public consultation on the County Roscommon Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws 2026, part of Phase 2 of the National Speed Limit Review, which would set new special speed limits on public roads across the county. The consultation opened on Tuesday, 28 July 2026 and closes on Thursday, 27 August 2026 at 5pm, giving members of the public a defined window to review the proposals and submit observations before the bye-laws are finalised.
Supporting maps and the draft bye-laws are available for inspection during office hours, 9:30am to 1pm and 2pm to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday, at three locations: the Roads and Transportation Department at Aras an Chontae in Roscommon town, the Boyle Municipal District Office on Cootehall Street, and the Athlone Municipal District Office at Athlone Civic Centre in Monksland. There is no public meeting or drop-in session attached to the consultation, so engaging with it means reading the documents at one of these offices, or online through the council’s consultation portal, and submitting a written observation before the deadline. Anyone with a road in their area affected by a proposed change is encouraged to check the maps directly, since speed limit reviews of this kind can alter limits on roads that have not changed in years.
Aras an Chontae is in Roscommon town, at the crossroads of the N60 and N61, with Bus Éireann services from Dublin, Galway and Athlone and a railway station on the Dublin to Westport line. The Boyle and Athlone district offices are similarly central to their respective towns.
