At McGourty's Bar · Main Street, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon
McGourty’s Bar on Main Street is Castlerea’s go-to pub for an evening out, and on a Saturday night it earns that reputation easily. This family-run bar has built a loyal following across Roscommon by keeping things simple: good drink, live music most weekends, sport on a big screen, and a welcome that extends to regulars and first-timers alike. If you are passing through west Roscommon or staying locally and want a proper night out rather than a quiet pint, this is the place.
The entertainment at McGourty’s runs across a broad range - live bands most Friday and Saturday nights covering everything from rock and acoustic sets to country, with traditional Irish sessions thrown in through an association with Ceolthas Castlerea. Past performers have included local favourites La Bamba, Lick My Stereo, Lightning Strikes, and The Dublin City Ramblers, which gives you a sense of the range. Sing-alongs and general craic are part of the deal. When there is no band, the pool table, darts and the big-screen sport fill the gap - the bar has developed a following for horse racing in particular. Outside, there is a courtyard beer garden with decking, useful on a fine summer evening before the music starts. The bar holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor and sits at number one of Castlerea’s nightlife venues.
Castlerea is on the N60 road, roughly 40 km west of Roscommon town and about 50 km east of Castlebar. By road from Dublin it is around two hours, taking the M4 motorway west towards Roscommon. Irish Rail runs the Westport / Ballina line through Castlerea - the train from Dublin Heuston takes just under two and a half hours and stops at Castlerea station, which is a short walk from Main Street. Bus Eireann also serves the town on the Dublin to Westport route. If you are driving, parking on and around Main Street is generally straightforward on weekend evenings.
Castlerea is the main town in west Roscommon and the gateway to Clonalis House, the ancestral home of the O’Conor Don family and one of Ireland’s more interesting heritage properties. The surrounding countryside is classic Roscommon - lakes, bogland and quiet roads. There is more to see in Castlerea and across Co. Roscommon.
