Elphin Agricultural Show

At Elphin Mart Grounds · Elphin, Co. Roscommon

Elphin Agricultural Show with livestock and traditional rural competitions

The Elphin Agricultural Show is one of the long-running one-day shows on the Irish agricultural calendar - now in its 46th year and still drawing competitors and visitors from across north Roscommon and beyond. Held at the Elphin Mart Grounds on the last Sunday of August, it is the kind of day that has barely changed in shape since it began: livestock in the ring, home produce on the table, crafts on display, and a good crowd making a proper day of it. It suits families, farming folk, and anyone who wants to see a real working show rather than a commercial festival.

What to expect

The show runs from 9am and covers an impressive spread of 17 competitive sections. In the livestock rings you will find brood mares and foals, young horses, Irish Draught horses, ponies, donkeys, and carriage driving alongside pedigree and commercial cattle, sheep, and poultry classes. Outside the livestock world, there are sections for home industries, arts and crafts, photography, horticulture and flowers, and pets - dogs and cats welcome. Live music keeps the atmosphere easy through the afternoon. Prize money is offered across the classes, and a raffle runs alongside the main competitions, with a weanling heifer or cash equivalent as the headline prize. The show is organised by the Elphin Agricultural Show Society and is supported by local business sponsorship.

Getting there

Elphin is a small town in north County Roscommon, roughly equidistant between Roscommon town to the south and Carrick-on-Shannon to the north-east. The show venue is the Elphin Livestock Mart, north of the town centre - Eircode F45 W672. From Longford, take the N5 west to Strokestown and the R368 from there, about 45 minutes. From Sligo, the N4 to Boyle and N61 toward Roscommon brings you in from the north in around an hour. From Athlone, head north on the N61 through Roscommon town and Tulsk. Show signs are posted on all approach roads on the day. Parking is available on-site. There is no practical public transport option to Elphin, so a car is the realistic choice.

While you’re in Elphin

Elphin is a quiet town with a good few reasons to linger - the Elphin Windmill, one of the few restored windmills in Ireland, is worth a look, and the surrounding north Roscommon countryside is easy country for a slow drive. There is more to see in Elphin and across Co. Roscommon.
