At Sligo GAA Centre of Excellence · Scarden, Strandhill Road, Sligo, Co. Sligo
Sligo GAA runs a three-day hurling and camogie camp at its Centre of Excellence in Scarden in the last week of the summer holidays, giving children aged 7 to 12 a structured introduction to both games from county coaching staff. It runs alongside the county’s regular Cul Camps but is specifically for hurling and camogie, sports that get less pitch time in most primary schools than football, so it is often the only formal coaching many south and north Sligo children get in the small ball game before secondary school. Places are booked through Sligo GAA’s online registration system.
The camp runs from 10am to 2pm each day from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21 August, split into age-appropriate coaching groups covering the basic skills of hurling and camogie - striking, first touch, blocking and small-sided games - built up over the three days rather than crammed into one session. Coaching is delivered by Sligo GAA coaching staff at the county’s dedicated Centre of Excellence pitches in Scarden, on the Strandhill Road just outside Sligo town, which gives children a rare chance to train on a proper county-standard facility rather than a local club pitch. The cost is €50 per child, or €120 for a family booking three or more children, and the fee covers coaching across all three days. Parents should expect children to need a hurl, helmet with faceguard, and suitable boots - check with Sligo GAA on booking for the exact kit list.
The Centre of Excellence is on the Strandhill Road (R292) a short drive from Sligo town centre, on the same route as Strandhill village and beach. There is parking on site. It is not close enough to walk from town, so families without a car should arrange a lift or taxi for drop-off and collection.
Strandhill beach and the surf town of the same name are a few minutes further along the same road, an easy option for an afternoon swim after camp finishes at 2pm. There is more to see in Sligo and across Co. Sligo.
