At Market Square and surrounds, Armagh City Centre · Market Square, Armagh, Co. Armagh
Every Saturday from late July through to early September, Armagh city centre turns into an open-air venue for an afternoon of free live music, family entertainment and creative drop-in activities. Summer in the City is the council’s way of bringing people into the streets when the weather is on your side, and it runs from midday to four o’clock with no tickets, no wristbands and no booking - just turn up. It suits families with young children, older visitors on a day out, and anyone who wants a reason to linger in the city rather than pass through.
The programme shifts week to week, so no two Saturdays are quite the same. Previous editions have included live musicians playing at Market Square, street art demonstrations at McCrum’s Court, spoken word, dance, children’s cookery sessions, science shows and magic. The council organises each Saturday around a loose theme, with a mix of sit-down performances and drop-in activities spread across three locations - Market Square, McCrum’s Court and the forecourt outside the Market Place Theatre.
The Market Place Theatre itself is a well-regarded arts centre on Market Street with a 400-seat auditorium and a studio space; the outdoor programming during Summer in the City uses the building as a backdrop and a gathering point rather than a ticketed venue. The whole area around the square is walkable and compact, which makes it easy to move between stages or take a break at a nearby cafe.
The series wraps up on 7 September, running into the Armagh Food and Cider Weekend (5 to 8 September) - so the final Saturday of Summer in the City sits within that broader festival. Check the weekly programme at visitarmagh.com/summerinthecity for what is on each date.
