That Beats Banagher Festival

At Banagher Town · Banagher, Co. Offaly

That Beats Banagher Festival with crafts and family activities by the River Shannon

Banagher throws one of the most distinctive summer festivals in the Irish midlands - a three-day celebration that leans into the town’s own mythology, its centuries of craft tradition, and its position on the River Shannon. That Beats Banagher Festival runs from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July 2026, spread across multiple locations in the town, and entry is free. It suits families, anyone who enjoys traditional skills, and visitors who want to see an Irish market town at its most alive.

What to expect

The centrepiece of the programme is Forged in Ireland, which brings together master blacksmiths and craft artisans for live blacksmithing demonstrations and iron ore smelting workshops. This is not a passive display - visitors can get close to the forge, watch iron shaped by hand, and take part in workshops themselves. The Battle of the Blacksmiths component, which has been a highlight of recent festivals, pits skilled smiths against each other in front of a crowd.

Alongside the metalwork, the festival runs heritage walking tours of the town, family-friendly craft activities, film screenings, and community arts events. The Long Puck - a traditional hurling competition played across a distance - has featured in previous years, taking the game out of the pitch and into the streets and open country around the town. Live music and open mic sessions fill the evenings.

The phrase “that beats Banagher” is an old Irish expression meaning something surpasses all else - the festival takes that as both its name and its ambition.

Getting there

Banagher sits on the west bank of the River Shannon in Co. Offaly, roughly 45 kilometres west of Tullamore and about 20 kilometres south of Athlone. By road, take the N62 from Birr or approach from Ballinasloe on the Galway side. There is no direct rail link to Banagher; the nearest stations are Tullamore and Athlone, from which you would need a car or taxi. Driving is the practical choice for most visitors. Street parking is available in the town centre and along the riverfront, though during festival days it fills early - arriving before midday is sensible.

While you’re in Banagher

The town’s riverfront is worth an hour on its own, and the Shannon here is broad and unhurried. Banagher Marina is a popular stop for cabin-cruiser hire, and several pubs sit right on the water. There is more to see in Banagher and across Co. Offaly.
