The Source Arts Centre in Thurles presents “The Pretty Procedure” on Friday, 4 September 2026 at 8pm, a work-in-progress sharing of a new play followed by a post-show conversation with the creative team. Written by and starring Tzarini Meyler, directed by Al Dalton, the piece draws on lived experience of facial deformity, jaw surgery and body dysmorphia to examine the medicalised body, girlhood and the pressure to be conventionally beautiful. Tickets cost €5, and the show is recommended for ages 12 and up.
Because this is billed explicitly as a work-in-progress reading rather than a finished production, the staging is likely to be minimal, with the script and performance still being shaped ahead of a fuller run elsewhere. The two-hander cast is Meyler as “Woman” and Gerry Cannon as “Surgeon,” a pairing that frames the piece as a conversation, or confrontation, between patient and medical system. The subject matter, facial surgery and body image, is handled through personal testimony rather than abstraction, and the low €5 ticket price reflects the show’s development status rather than its ambition. After the performance the creative team stays on stage for audience discussion, which is standard practice for work-in-progress sharings and gives the audience a direct route to respond to what they have just seen. The evening is presented with support from the Tipperary Arts Office alongside The Source Arts Centre itself.
