Twelfth of July Demonstration - Newtownhamilton 2026

At Newtownhamilton Town Centre · Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh

Twelfth of July Orange Order parade, County Armagh

The County Armagh Twelfth of July Demonstration is one of the most substantial Orange Order parades in Ireland, and in 2026 it comes to Newtownhamilton. Because the Twelfth falls on a Sunday, the main demonstration is held on Monday 13 July - a tradition the Orange Order has long observed. Eleven District Lodges from across County Armagh assemble here, bringing with them 150 private lodges and close to 5,000 Orangemen. For anyone curious about the tradition of Orange parading, or simply drawn by the spectacle of massed accordion, flute and pipe bands moving through a small south Armagh town, this is a significant occasion. The County Armagh demonstration is regularly described as the largest single Orange gathering in the world, with spectator numbers running to tens of thousands on the day.

What to expect

The parade marks the 335th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne (1690), the event at the heart of Orange commemorations every July. Districts taking part include Portadown, Richhill, Loughgall, Tandragee, Armagh City, Lurgan, Killylea, Keady, Newtownhamilton itself, Markethill and Bessbrook - meaning lodges travel in from right across the county. The colour comes from sashes and collarettes, the banners carried by each lodge, and the bands: accordion bands, flute bands, and pipe bands all feature. The procession moves through the town centre before reaching the demonstration field on the Castleblayney Road, where speeches and a religious service take place.

There are also pre-Twelfth events worth knowing about. A Family Fun Night is planned at the demonstration field on Friday 10 July at 7pm, and a Boyne Anniversary Service is scheduled at 2nd Newtownhamilton Presbyterian Church on Sunday 12 July at 3:30pm.

Road closures will apply throughout the town on the day of the parade itself.

Getting there

Newtownhamilton sits in south County Armagh on the B30 road, roughly 15 miles south of Armagh city. Coming from Newry, it is around 12 miles via the B113. The town is not served by regular rail, so most people arrive by car. On Twelfth day, expect heavy traffic well in advance of the parade - arrive early and be prepared for road closures in and around the town centre. Parking will be available in surrounding fields and on approach roads, though specific arrangements are confirmed closer to the date by the organising committee.

While you’re in Newtownhamilton

Newtownhamilton is a quiet market town and a good base for exploring the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which lies just to the south-east. There is more to see in Newtownhamilton and across Co. Armagh.
