July 12th parade celebrations

The Twelfth of July is one of the most significant days in the Ulster Protestant calendar, and Cookstown is one of the three main venues in Co. Tyrone where the Orange Order marks it with a major parade. In 2026, because the Twelfth falls on a Sunday, the main street parade in Cookstown takes place on Monday 13th July - but the weekend builds from Sunday 12th with a bannerette dedication ceremony, making the whole two-day period a genuine community occasion. For anyone curious about Ulster culture and tradition, or who simply enjoys the spectacle of massed marching bands, this is a considerable event.

What to expect

The Cookstown parade draws together seven Orange Districts - Killyman, Stewartstown, Castlecaulfield, Pomeroy, Coagh, Benburb and Cookstown - with over 40 bands taking to the streets. Tamlaghtmore Ark of Safety LOL 469 leads the procession, accompanied by Tamlaghtmore Silver Band, and six junior boys’ lodges also march. The parade moves off at noon from the Assembly Field on Grange Road, travelling through the town centre via Tullywigan Road, Dungannon Road, Killymoon Street and Church Street before reaching the field. Platform proceedings - speeches, hymns and prayers - begin at 2:30pm, giving the event a formal structure around the spectacle of the march itself.

On the Sunday (12th July), Cookstown District LOL No.3 will be unfurling and dedicating a new District Bannerette - a quieter but meaningful ceremony worth catching if you are in the area early.

Road closures will be in effect along the parade route for much of the morning and early afternoon. If you are driving, plan your approach and check local diversions in advance.

Getting there

Cookstown sits roughly in the centre of Co. Tyrone, about 45 minutes from Dungannon and an hour from Omagh or Londonderry. The main road access is via the A29 from Dungannon to the south or Maghera to the north-east. Translink operates bus services into Cookstown from Dungannon, Magherafelt and surrounding towns - on a parade day, the bus is often the more practical option given road closures. Town-centre parking will be disrupted; use side streets and residential areas further out, or arrive early.

While you’re in Cookstown

Cookstown is best known for its extraordinarily long and straight main street - one of the longest in Ireland - and the surrounding area offers good walks around Lough Fea and the Davagh Forest trails. There is more to see in Cookstown and across Co. Tyrone.
