Curator Tour: Ulster Emigration and Black History

At Ulster American Folk Park · 2 Mellon Rd, Omagh, Co. Tyrone BT78 5QU

Cabin outlines representing enslaved quarters at Rogan House, Ulster American Folk Park

Curator of Emigration Liam Corry leads a guided tour of the Ulster American Folk Park examining the links between Ulster emigration and Black History, opening the museum’s Black History Month programme. Two sessions run on Sunday, 11 October 2026, each around 45 to 60 minutes, ending at the Rogan House, a reconstructed Tennessee plantation dwelling built by a family who left Co. Tyrone for America in the nineteenth century.

What to expect

The tour looks at the marginalised histories of enslaved people of African descent whose lives intersected with Ulster emigrant families in the American south. It traces the Rogan family’s journey from Co. Tyrone to Tennessee, where they developed a plantation that held around 71 enslaved people, and finishes among the cabin outlines that represent the enslaved quarters on the reconstructed site. Liam Corry draws on the museum’s research into transatlantic emigration to place these individual stories within the wider pattern of Ulster-American connections that the Folk Park exists to tell. The tour is suitable for all ages but is aimed mainly at visitors over 16 given the subject matter, and runs twice on the day so visitors can fit it around the rest of their visit to the museum.

Getting there

The Folk Park is signposted off the A5, about two miles north of Omagh, with free on-site parking for cars and coaches.

While you’re in Omagh

The tour is one part of a wider day out at Omagh’s biggest heritage attraction, with the reconstructed Ulster street and emigrant ship also open on the day. There is more to explore across Co. Tyrone.
