The Wild Atlantic Mizen Cycle is one of West Cork’s longest-running charity sportives, now in its 22nd year and closing in on three-quarters of a million euro raised for local causes. Three routes take in some of the most dramatic Atlantic coastline in Ireland, all starting and finishing in Bantry town. If you want a cycling challenge with scenery that justifies the effort, and a reason to feel good about doing it, this is a strong option for your July diary.
Three routes give you flexibility: 65km, 100km, and 130km. The longer two head south from Bantry through Durrus and climb the flank of Mount Gabriel to Schull, then push west to a food stop in Goleen and out to Mizen Head before the return via Barley Cove. The 130km adds the Sheep’s Head Peninsula and the Goats Path climb. The 65km takes a flatter line through Toormore, skips Mount Gabriel, and loops back via the north side of the Mizen Peninsula.
Food and water stops are at Goleen and Durrus. Ambulances and paramedics cover the course, and a mechanical helpline number is on your wristband. All riders must be 16 or over and wear a helmet. Bring two spare inner tubes, a pump, and tyre levers - the organisers recommend a full bike service before the day. Sign-on is at Bantry Tourist Office on Friday 10 July from 7pm to 8:30pm, and again Saturday morning from 6:30am. Official start is 8am. Registration costs €65, which includes insurance.
Bantry is roughly 90km west of Cork city on the N71 - about 90 minutes by car. Bus Eireann runs services from Cork, though given the early start most cyclists drive. Designated car parks are provided; details come with your registration confirmation.
If you arrive the evening before, Bantry is worth exploring - there is a Friday market on Wolfe Tone Square and Bantry House and Gardens nearby for anyone travelling with non-cyclists. There is more to see in Bantry and across Co. Cork.
