Arva Three Province Festival - Food Market and Tastings

At Market Square and The Brewery, Arva · Market Square, Arvagh, Co. Cavan

Food market at the Arva Three Province Festival, Arvagh

Arvagh is one of those Irish towns with a genuinely unusual distinction: it sits at the point where the three historic provinces of Ulster, Leinster and Connacht converge. The Arva Three Province Festival was built around that fact, and every summer the town makes the most of it with a week-long programme of music, sport, outdoor events and community gatherings. The food market and tastings day is one of the most accessible parts of the programme - free to attend, centred on the Market Square, and a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Cavan’s quieter midlands.

What to expect

The food market runs on Market Square from 2pm, bringing local producers and food stalls into the heart of the town. The square itself has its own history - the Market House that still stands there was built by the Earls of Gosford in the 1800s, when Arvagh was a more significant market town than it appears today.

From 5pm, the focus shifts to The Brewery Bar, directly across from the square, where Arva Tastings takes place until 7pm. Local food and drink producers use the session to showcase what they make - expect the kind of introductions you do not get in a supermarket aisle, where the person explaining the product is often the person who made it.

The Brewery itself is a straightforward, well-run local pub with a covered outdoor area, bar food and live music on weekends. It is the kind of place you can linger after the tastings wind down. Food and drink purchases are at normal prices throughout.

Getting there

Arvagh is roughly 25km southwest of Cavan town. The R198 and R200 roads both run into the town. If you are coming from Dublin, the N3/N55 corridor brings you up through Cavan and then southwest. There is no direct public transport into Arvagh, so a car is the practical option from most directions. Parking in and around Market Square is generally easy on a Sunday.

While you’re in Arvagh

The surrounding countryside takes in Garty Lough and the quiet drumlin landscape that Cavan does well. The town itself is compact - a couple of hours covers the festival action and a walk around. There is more to see in Arvagh and across Co. Cavan.
