At Athleague Community Centre · Athleague, Co. Roscommon
Athleague Community Centre has run a weekly bingo night for more than 46 years, making it one of the longest-standing fixtures in the village. It takes place every Tuesday evening, with cards on sale from around 8pm and play starting at 8:30pm, drawing a regular crowd from Athleague and the surrounding townlands. The evening’s return after a break was welcomed locally as one of the village’s few standing weekly social occasions, the kind of night where the same faces turn up week after week.
Expect a traditional cards-and-caller bingo night rather than anything elaborate, with books sold at the door and a run of games through the evening, usually building through a line, a full house and a jackpot game as the night goes on. It is as much a social occasion as a game, regulars know each other, and the hall doubles as a chance to catch up on village news between rounds. Proceeds typically go toward the upkeep of the community centre itself, so a night’s play also helps fund the hall’s other activities through the rest of the week, from committee meetings to other clubs that use the same room.
Athleague Community Centre is in the village of Athleague, on the road between Roscommon town and Ballinasloe. There is parking at the hall for anyone driving in from outside the village.
Athleague is a small village on the River Suck, with a pub and shop for anyone making an evening of the bingo, and it sits within easy reach of the rest of Co. Roscommon.
