At Ballyconnell Town Centre · Main Street, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan
The Ballyconnell Festival is one of those Bank Holiday weekends that people in west Cavan clear the diary for. Running from Thursday 30 July to Sunday 3 August 2026, it fills the town with live music, street entertainment, and the kind of low-cost summer fun that the whole family can get stuck into. If you are looking for an easy, genuine Irish festival - small enough that you can walk everywhere, big enough to keep you busy for days - this is a solid option.
The festival follows a format that has built up a loyal following across the Cavan-Fermanagh border region. Based on the 2025 programme, evenings are anchored by live concerts featuring country and traditional acts, with previous years headlined by performers like the Danny Byrne Band, Paddy Treacy, and Jimmy Buckley.
The weekend reaches its peak on Saturday with a traditional Fair Day on the main street - kids’ tractor run, pet show, craft stalls, street music, and a duck race all feature. A fire station guided tour has been a hit with younger visitors. Sunday typically brings a free family afternoon in Eugene O’Reilly Park, rounding the weekend off with live music in the open air.
Earlier in the week, the festival tends to open with lighter community events - a pub quiz, teas and drop-ins at the community centre - which give the festival a neighbourly feel alongside the bigger evening shows. Some events are ticketed; others are free. The full 2026 programme is expected to follow a similar shape and will be confirmed closer to the date on the festival’s Facebook page.
Ballyconnell sits on the R200, roughly 30 km west of Cavan Town. From the north, the A509 from Enniskillen brings you across the border into the town in under 30 minutes. Dublin-based visitors typically take the M3 to Cavan Town and head west from there - allow around two hours from the city.
Public transport is limited. Bus Eireann runs services to Cavan Town; from there, a local connection or taxi covers the remaining distance. If you are travelling from Enniskillen, Translink routes serve the border area. Most visitors arrive by car. Town centre parking is available on and around Main Street.
Ballyconnell lies on the Shannon-Erne Waterway, which makes it a natural stopover for cruising holidays and a pleasant spot for a walk along the canal bank before or after festival events. The surrounding countryside is quiet and green, typical of west Cavan’s drumlin landscape. There is more to see in Ballyconnell and across Co. Cavan.
