At The Imperial Bar · 47 Main Street, Cavan Town, Co. Cavan
Cavan gets a proper comedy club night on the third Friday of most months, and Bite the Bullet is the one that has made it stick. Running since at least 2025 at The Imperial Bar on Main Street, the club was set up by Darren, a Cavan comedian who cut his teeth on the Dublin circuit and headlined at Edinburgh Fringe 2024. He MCs each show and books a named headliner from the Irish comedy world, then fills out the bill with support acts. The result is a night that punches well above what you might expect from a market town - and the relaxed upstairs room at The Imperial keeps the atmosphere close and loose, exactly what live stand-up needs.
Each show runs for roughly 90 minutes and follows the classic club format: a MC to warm the room, one or two support acts, and a headliner who closes the night. Previous headliners at this Cavan room include Fred Cooke (familiar from RTE and The Tommy Tiernan Show), William Thompson (BBC), Martin Angolo (RTE, Amazon Prime), Shane Clifford, and Al Porter - a solid roster that signals the organiser has real industry contacts. The Imperial’s upstairs events space is a dedicated room away from the main bar, which means the crowd are there for comedy, not wandering in from the lounge. Doors typically open at 7:30pm and the show starts at 8:00pm. It sells out regularly, so booking in advance through Eventbrite is the sensible move - the door price is usually a few euro higher than the advance rate.
Cavan Town sits on the N3, roughly an hour from Dublin and 40 minutes from Monaghan or Enniskillen. Bus Eireann runs services from Dublin Busaras (route 30) and the journey takes around two hours. The Imperial Bar is on Main Street in the town centre, a short walk from the town’s main car parks - the multi-storey on College Street and the surface car park off Bridge Street are the closest options. If you are coming from outside Cavan Town, driving and finding parking before 7:30pm is straightforward on a Friday evening.
Cavan Town is compact enough to make a proper evening of it - have dinner somewhere on Main Street before the show and you have the night covered. The county is lake country, and if you are coming from further afield it is worth arriving early enough to take a look around. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
