At Cavan Burren Park · Blacklion, Co. Cavan
A free guided walk around one of Ireland’s most significant prehistoric landscapes - led by a Geopark Guide who knows every stone - is a rare find. Dani Thuillier takes small groups through Cavan Burren Park on a gentle loop that brings Neolithic life, glacial geology and local folklore together in a way that a sign or leaflet simply cannot. It suits anyone with a curiosity about the past: families, solo walkers, visitors new to archaeology, and seasoned history enthusiasts alike.
The walk covers the main trails of Cavan Burren Park, a site within the UNESCO Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. The park holds a remarkable concentration of prehistoric remains packed into a compact limestone upland - wedge tombs, portal dolmens, cist graves, a promontory fort, ancient hut sites and relict field walls, some dating to the Neolithic period several thousand years ago.
Dani focuses on the stories behind the monuments: who built them, how the landscape was farmed and settled, and what local folklore has preserved about these places over the centuries. Along the way you will also encounter glacial erratics - boulders deposited by retreating ice sheets - and the dramatic karst limestone features that make this corner of Cavan geologically distinct. The Giant’s Leap Wedge Tomb, considered one of the most intact examples on the island, is a highlight of the route.
The walk is gentle and suitable for all levels of fitness. A wooden boardwalk section assists with accessibility on part of the route. Sturdy waterproof footwear is strongly recommended regardless of the forecast - the limestone plateau holds water and the west Cavan weather is changeable.
Walks run on a rolling schedule throughout summer. Booking is essential; Dani confirms exact times directly by phone or email.
