Cavan Elite Foal Auction at Indoor Championships

At Cavan Equestrian Centre · Latt, Cavan, Co. Cavan

Elite foal auction at Cavan Equestrian Centre Indoor Championships

Each September, Cavan Equestrian Centre runs one of Ireland’s most focused equestrian sales: a curated auction of elite sport foals, held on the same day as the Cavan Indoor Championships. Entry to watch is free, and the crowd tends to be a mix of serious buyers, breeders scouting bloodlines, and horse people who simply enjoy the atmosphere of a well-run sale. If you have any interest in sport horse breeding or showjumping, this is a proper afternoon out.

What to expect

The foals on offer are pre-selected - not open submission. Each lot is filmed at a summer selection day in July, assessed for conformation, movement, and breeding potential, then catalogued ahead of the auction. By the time September comes around, the foals have grown on considerably from those early videos, so buyers who attend in person get a clear advantage.

Bidding runs both live on the day and online through bid.cavanequestrian.com, which means competition can come from buyers across Ireland and abroad. Previous editions have included offspring from some of the top names in European showjumping bloodlines - Cornet Obolensky, Big Star, Nixon van’t Meulenhof among past lots - with a premium placed on genetics from proven competition horses. The auction runs as part of the wider Cavan Indoor Championships show programme, so there is plenty of equestrian activity around it.

Cavan Equestrian Centre is a well-established venue with indoor facilities, which means the event runs regardless of weather. Expect a working agricultural atmosphere rather than a glamorous sales ring - practical, busy, and seriously horse-focused.

Getting there

Cavan town is roughly 1 hour 20 minutes from Dublin on the N3, and about 1 hour 10 minutes from Belfast via the A4/N54. Bus Eireann services run from Dublin Busaras to Cavan town. Cavan Equestrian Centre is at Latt, approximately 3km south of Cavan town on the N3 - straightforward to find if you are driving. Parking on site is standard for an equestrian facility, with room for horseboxes and trailers as well as regular vehicles.

While you’re in Cavan

Cavan town itself is compact and easy to spend a few hours in - good for lunch before or after the sale. The surrounding county has lakes and drumlin countryside worth exploring if the weather holds. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
