Cavan Young Stock Sport Horse and Premier Foal Sale

At Cavan Equestrian Centre · Latt, Cavan, Co. Cavan

Young stock sport horse and foal sale at Cavan Equestrian Centre

The Cavan Young Stock Sport Horse and Premier Foal Sale is one of the most significant dates in the Irish sport horse breeding calendar. Held each autumn at Cavan Equestrian Centre in Latt, it draws breeders, buyers, and bloodstock enthusiasts from across Ireland and further afield - people who take their horses seriously and know the difference between a good foal and a great one. Entry to the sale grounds is free, making it as much a social occasion for the equestrian community as it is a commercial event.

What to expect

The sale covers the full range of young stock: foals, yearlings, two-year-olds, broodmares, and potential broodmares. Alongside the main catalogue, a Premier Foal Section features pre-selected animals judged on conformation, movement, and performance pedigree from both sire and dam - entry to that section requires a selection day earlier in the summer, so only verified quality lots make it through.

Viewing typically opens from 9am, giving buyers time to walk the lines and inspect lots at close quarters before the auctioneer starts at 10am. For those who cannot attend in person, Cavan Equestrian runs a live online bidding platform at bid.cavanequestrian.com, so competition on the day is genuinely international. The centre describes itself as the busiest equestrian venue in Ireland for showjumping events and horse auctions - the infrastructure backs that up, with proper sale facilities and plenty of space for horses and people alike.

Getting there

Cavan Equestrian Centre sits at Latt, roughly 3km south of Cavan Town on the N3, which makes it straightforward to reach by car from most of the country. From Dublin the drive is around 90 minutes on the N3/M3. From Monaghan or Enniskillen you are looking at under an hour. Parking on site is ample - bring cash for the catalogue if you plan to bid, and allow time to park and walk the grounds before the sale opens.

There is no direct bus service to the venue, so a car is the practical option. Cavan Town itself is well served by Bus Eireann from Dublin Busaras (route 30), so a taxi from the town for the short run to Latt is feasible if you need it.

While you’re in Cavan

Cavan Town is compact and easy to explore on foot - the canal, the cathedral, and a handful of decent lunch spots are all within walking distance of the main street. The wider county is lake country, good for a drive or a walk if you are making a day of the trip. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
