At Clonmel Racecourse · Powerstown Park, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary
A mid-week evening at the races in Clonmel is one of those easy, good-value days out that feels more social than sporting - though there is plenty of proper racing to follow if you know your form. Powerstown Park has been hosting meetings since 1856, and the course has the ease of a place that has had 170 years to work out what racegoers actually want: clear sightlines, decent food, a lively bar, and enough space that you are not constantly pushed for room. The Wednesday evening slot suits people who want a race day without taking a whole day off work, and the first race at 4:15pm means you can be home at a reasonable hour.
Clonmel is a National Hunt course - jumps rather than flat - set in a wooded, scenic stretch of south Tipperary. The Grand Stand holds up to 3,500 people; the Club Stand seats around 1,000 and has a carvery restaurant for anyone wanting a full meal before the card gets under way. There is also a snack bar and the T.A. Morris Grandstand bar for something quicker. A big screen near the stands lets you follow races even when the horses are on the far side of the track.
The betting ring has a marquee, so if the September weather is mixed you are not standing out in the open. Catering is handled by Masterchefs Hospitality, who are well established on the Irish racing circuit. The full race card - number of races, runners, and times - is published on the racecourse website ahead of the meeting.
If you have not been to the races before, the advice from the course is to arrive about 90 minutes before the first race. That gives you time to pick up a racecard, get your bearings, and settle in before things get busy.
Clonmel is on the N24, roughly midway between Waterford and Tipperary town, and is straightforward to reach by car from most of Munster and south Leinster. The racecourse at Powerstown Park is about 3km from Clonmel town centre - follow signs from the main road. On-site parking is ample and is the norm for this venue.
By public transport, Bus Eireann runs services to Clonmel from Waterford, Limerick, and Kilkenny. The town centre is then a short taxi or rideshare trip from the racecourse.
Clonmel is the county town of Tipperary and sits on the River Suir, with a decent main street, several good pubs, and the Hearn’s Hotel if you are making a night of it. The surrounding countryside - the Comeragh and Knockmealdown mountains are both within easy reach - is worth a look if you are coming from further away. There is more to see in Clonmel and across Co. Tipperary.
