Designer Minds STEAM Summer Camps - Multiple Locations

At Multiple venues · Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel, Cashel and other locations, Co. Tipperary

STEAM summer camp activities

Designer Minds runs one of the most popular hands-on science and technology camps in Ireland, and their week-long STEAM camp at Comeragh College in Carrick-on-Suir is a solid choice for primary school kids who like making things, breaking things, and figuring out how things work. Split into junior (1st to 3rd class) and senior (4th to 6th class) groups, the camp runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm, giving parents a full morning to themselves while the children get stuck into proper science rather than worksheet science.

What to expect

Each day covers a different discipline within the STEAM umbrella - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths - so no two mornings are the same. Over the week children work through polymer chemistry (making slime and oobleck to understand non-Newtonian fluids), chromatography art projects, physics-based marble run challenges, robotics programming, and stop-motion animation using LEGO. Maths gets a look-in too via Minecraft problem-solving, which tends to land well with kids who are already comfortable in that world.

Groups are small and led by trained, Garda-vetted instructors. Children work at their own pace - there are no tests, no grades, and no pressure to be the fastest. The emphasis is on experimenting and getting things wrong in a productive way. Designer Minds camps are rated 9.4 out of 10 by parents on their platform, and places fill up quickly each year, so early booking is worth it.

Getting there

Carrick-on-Suir sits on the River Suir in the south-east of Tipperary, about 20 km west of Waterford city and 30 km south of Clonmel. By road, it is straightforward from Waterford via the N24, and from Clonmel via the R680. The N24 also connects from Cahir and Tipperary town to the west. There is no direct train to Carrick-on-Suir itself; the nearest rail stations are Clonmel and Waterford, with onward travel by bus or car. Parking at Comeragh College is generally available on-site during school holiday periods.

While you’re in Carrick-on-Suir

If you are dropping children off for the morning, Carrick-on-Suir town centre is a short drive away and worth a look - the 16th-century Ormond Castle, a rare unfortified manor house, is the stand-out attraction and open to visitors in summer. There is more to see in Carrick-on-Suir and across Co. Tipperary.
