Every second Thursday morning, Portlaoise Library’s children’s area fills with buggies and babies for Baby Book Club, a fortnightly drop-in session for infants, toddlers and the adults who mind them. The next session falls on 13 August 2026. It is one of a long list of standing groups the library runs alongside its book stock, and like the library’s other early-years programmes it is free and does not require much beyond turning up. The session runs for about half an hour and is built around simple, repeatable routines that very young children respond to.
Sessions are built around short stories, nursery rhymes, action songs and a stretch of free social time, all pitched at babies and toddlers rather than school-age children, Portlaoise Library runs separate storytime and book club sessions for older kids. Library staff lead the songs and rhymes, and the informal, unstructured second half gives parents and carers a chance to talk to each other while the children play, which is as much the point of the session as the books are. It fits into a wider early-years programme at Portlaoise Library that also includes sensory storytime and messy play sessions through the summer months. No booking is generally required for the regular fortnightly slot, though it is worth checking with the library if you are coming for the first time.
