At Abbeyleix Bog Walk · Abbeyleix Bog, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois
Laois Sports Partnership runs a Social Wellness Walk at Abbeyleix Bog on Thursday, 13 August 2026, part of the partnership’s Her Outdoors Week programme delivered in collaboration with Mountmellick Walking Group. It is a relaxed group walk pitched at connection and activity rather than pace, running from 9:30am to around midday.
The walk follows Abbeyleix Bog’s raised boardwalk trail through the reserve’s heath and bogland, at a pace the organisers describe as suitable for all levels of fitness. It is framed as a chance to “get active, enjoy nature and connect with others in the local community” rather than a fitness challenge, so there is no expectation of speed or distance targets, and walkers of very different fitness backgrounds can take part together. It fits into Laois Sports Partnership’s Her Outdoors Week, a week of outdoor taster sessions aimed at getting women and girls trying activities they might not otherwise access, alongside events like kayaking and paddleboarding tasters on the Vicarstown canal the same week. The walk itself is led rather than self-guided, with the Mountmellick Walking Group’s volunteers setting the route and pace. Entry is free and no booking fee applies, though registering in advance through Laois Sports Partnership helps organisers plan numbers.
Abbeyleix Bog is signposted from Abbeyleix town, a short drive from the town centre with parking at the reserve’s entrance.
Abbeyleix’s Georgian streetscape and heritage gardens are a short drive from the bog. There is more to see in Abbeyleix and across Co. Laois.
