Summer Holiday Camps - Multi-Activity

At Multiple Locations in Laois · Portlaoise, Cullahill, and other Co. Laois locations

Children in summer camp activities

The school gates close in late June and the question of how to fill six or seven weeks opens immediately. County Laois has a solid answer: a range of well-run camps spread across Portlaoise and beyond throughout July and August, taking children from as young as 4 right up to 12. These are camps with multi-year track records - drama and performance, hands-on science, outdoor action - run by established national providers, not pop-up operations.

What to expect

Several providers are operating in Laois this summer, each with a distinct angle.

STARCAMP runs its Portlaoise camp at Holy Family Senior School during the week of 20-24 July. The younger group (4-8 years, junior infants to 2nd class) gets singing, dancing, treasure hunts, magic and superhero themes. The older STARCREW (ages 8-12) works on hip-hop, acting, group performances and leadership. The camp has been running nationwide since 2007. Cost is €122 per child, with sibling and multi-camp discounts available.

Designer Minds STEAM runs at Portlaoise Parish Centre, week of 10-14 August, for 1st to 6th class. Children rotate through coding with robots, food science experiments, stop-motion animation with LEGO, electronics challenges and engineering models. Cost is €180 for the week, with a €30 deposit to secure a place. At time of writing, the junior group (1st-3rd class) was full; senior group (4th-6th class) still had places.

Let’s Go Multi-Activity Camp caters to ages 5-12 with two separate programmes - one for younger children, one for older - run by PE teachers, covering bouncy castles, assault courses, archery, KMX karts and team sports.

The Academy of Code runs online coding camps from beginner level up to Leaving Certificate standard.

Early booking is strongly advised. The most popular weeks fill months before the summer.

Getting there

Portlaoise is at the intersection of the M7 (Dublin-Limerick) and M8 (Cork) motorways - roughly an hour from Dublin by car. Bus Eireann serves the town from Dublin Busaras, Limerick and Kilkenny. Portlaoise also has an Intercity rail station with several daily departures from Heuston. Street parking is generally available near Holy Family Senior School and Portlaoise Parish Centre.

While you’re in Portlaoise

The Rock of Dunamase - a ruined castle perched on a limestone crag - is 5 km out the Stradbally road and makes a quick stop before or after pick-up. There is more to see in Portlaoise and across Co. Laois.
