Carrick-on-Shannon Tidy Towns Clean-Up

At Carrick-on-Shannon Tourist Office · The Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim

Volunteers on a Carrick-on-Shannon Tidy Towns clean-up

Carrick-on-Shannon Tidy Towns runs a weekly volunteer clean-up every Sunday morning, meeting at the Tourist Office beside the Bridge before heading out to litter-pick around the town. The group is behind Carrick-on-Shannon’s long run of Tidy Towns success, including being named Leitrim’s tidiest town and picking up gold medals in the national Tidy Towns competition, and the Sunday session is the main way new volunteers get involved in that work.

What to expect

Volunteers gather at the Tourist Office and spend about an hour walking a route around the town picking up litter, with bags, gloves and other equipment provided on the day, so there is no need to bring anything beyond suitable clothes for being outdoors. Beyond litter picking, the wider group also looks after flower beds, hanging baskets and other public planting around Carrick-on-Shannon, and tackles graffiti removal as it comes up. The Sunday clean-up is deliberately low-key and sociable, and regulars describe finishing up with tea and a chat afterwards rather than treating it as a chore. During summer, the group has also run additional Tuesday evening sessions, so there can be two chances a week to join in through the warmer months.

Getting there

The meeting point is the Tourist Office beside the Bridge in the centre of Carrick-on-Shannon, an easy landmark to find on foot from anywhere in town. There is no need to travel far, as the route covers the town centre itself.
