At Orchard Bar Car Park · Drumalee, Farnham Street, Cavan Town, Co. Cavan
Cavan Walkers is a hill walking group affiliated with Mountaineering Ireland that meets every second Sunday for a group walk somewhere in the Cavan and Leitrim area. The group meets at the Orchard Bar car park in Drumalee, Cavan town, before car-sharing on to that fortnight’s route, and it is built around a simple idea: get outdoors, walk in company, and make the hills more approachable for people who might not want to go alone.
Meeting time depends on where the walk is headed: 10am for routes within Cavan and Leitrim, or 9am for anything further afield, since a longer drive to the start point eats into the day. Walks typically run 4 to 5 hours and cover genuine hill terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness and proper walking boots are expected rather than optional extras. To spread the car-sharing load, the group has informal pick-up points in Ballyconnell, Bawnboy, Derrylin and Cootehill as well as the main meeting point in Cavan town, used depending on which direction that fortnight’s walk is heading. The pace is sociable rather than competitive, aimed at people who want company on the hills as much as the walk itself, and newcomers are welcomed rather than expected to already know the routes or the group.
The main meeting point is the Orchard Bar car park on Farnham Street in Drumalee, on the western edge of Cavan town, an easy find for anyone coming from outside the county. From there the group travels together to that fortnight’s actual walking route, which varies across Cavan and neighbouring Leitrim.
Cavan town is where the walk starts even if the hills themselves are further out, so it is worth allowing time to look around Main Street before or after. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
