At Killeshandra Community Centre · Railway Road, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan
Loop The Lakes brings runners and walkers out onto the roads around Killeshandra every September, and 2026 marks the 15th year the event has raised money for local mental health and family support services. Starting and finishing at Killeshandra Community Centre on Railway Road, the event offers two distances so that serious runners and casual walkers with children can take part on the same morning. Funds go directly to three charities with a strong presence in the area: SOSAD Ireland, the Focus Family Resource Centre, and C.A.P.S.
Registration and the start point are both at Killeshandra Community Centre, with the run getting underway at 12 noon on Saturday 5 September. Two routes are on offer: a 3.5km loop suited to families, beginners and anyone walking with a buggy or dog, and a longer 7km route for more experienced runners, both tracing roads around the town and its lakes. The event has built a loyal following over 15 years by keeping things simple and local - there is no elaborate obstacle course or complicated timing system, just a well-marshalled route through Killeshandra’s lake scenery, with marshals and water stops along the way. After the run there is usually a presentation and refreshments back at the community centre.
Killeshandra is on the R201, about 16km west of Cavan town. Killeshandra Community Centre is on Railway Road in the village centre, with parking available on site and on nearby streets.
Killeshandra sits between Lough Oughter and Derrybrick Lake, and the surrounding countryside is well worth a look before or after the run. There is more to see in Killeshandra and across Co. Cavan.
