Mid Tipp Cattle Mart (Thurles)

Mid Tipp Mart in Thurles opens its gates at 7:30am every Monday, and by mid-morning Ballycarrane, on the edge of town, is one of the busiest livestock trading sites in the region. The mart describes itself as the premier centre of cattle trading in Tipperary and much of the surrounding counties, and it backs that up with three sales rings and tens of thousands of cattle passing through across a typical year.

What to expect

Monday sales at Mid Tipp Mart cover store cattle, bullocks, bulls, cull cows, heifers and breeding stock, with the ring building through the morning as buyers arrive from across the region and beyond. Through the summer months calves also come through on Mondays alongside the regular cattle sale. The mart is run as a farmer co-operative, aiming to give both buyers and sellers a fair platform, and online bidding is available through the MartEye platform for those who cannot attend in person. Sellers should arrive early to have stock weighed and penned before the ring opens, while buyers can register either on site or in advance. Entry to walk the pens and watch the sale is free.

Getting there

From Dublin, the M7 and M8 motorways bring you south into Thurles in around 1 hour 40 minutes. From Cork, the M8 north through Cashel takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. Irish Rail serves Thurles on the Dublin Heuston to Cork line, with the station a short drive from the mart, and parking is available on site.
