At Mid Tipperary Co Operative Livestock Mart · Ballycarrane, Thurles, Co. Tipperary
Every Monday morning, Ballycarrane on the edge of Thurles comes alive well before most towns have finished breakfast. The Monday sale at Mid Tipp Mart is one of the most active livestock trading days in Munster - a proper working mart run by a farmer co-operative, for farmers. If you have stock to sell, buyers to meet, or just want to see a traditional Irish mart operating at full tilt, this is a worthwhile early start.
Mid Tipp Mart operates three sales rings and handles somewhere between 35,000 and 40,000 head of cattle across the year. The Monday sale focuses on bullocks, bulls, cull cows, and heifers, with bullock sales typically getting underway around 11:00am and cull cows followed by heifers from 11:30am. During June, July, and August, calves also come through on Mondays.
The mart describes itself as “the premier centre of cattle trading in Tipperary and indeed much of the surrounding counties,” and the numbers back that up, with buyers arriving from across the region. The co-operative is run by farmers for farmers, aiming to give sellers and buyers a fair platform. Online bidding is available via the MartEye platform for buyers who cannot attend in person, but the ringside atmosphere is the real thing.
Sellers should arrive early to have stock weighed and penned before the sale. Buyers can register on-site or in advance. Entry to walk the pens and watch the ring is free.
From Dublin, the M7 and M8 motorways bring you south into Thurles, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. From Cork, the M8 north to the Cashel junction and on through Cashel takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. Irish Rail serves Thurles on the Dublin Heuston to Cork line, with the station a short drive from the mart. Parking is available on site.
Thurles is the home of the GAA - the Gaelic Athletic Association was founded here in 1884, and Hayes’ Hotel on Liberty Square is where it all began. The Cathedral of the Assumption in the town centre is also worth a look. There is more to see in Thurles and across Co. Tipperary.
