National Heritage Week 2026 - traditional currach on the water at a heritage event

Nine days of free heritage events spread across Co. Louth is a rare thing, and National Heritage Week 2026 delivers exactly that. Running from 15 to 23 August, the programme pulls together some of the county’s most compelling historic sites - Carlingford Castle, Old Mellifont Abbey, Barmeath Castle and the Battle of the Boyne visitor centre at Oldbridge - and opens them up with guided tours, living history displays, and open days that cost nothing to attend. This suits families, curious day-trippers, and anyone who wants to move slowly through a place and actually understand what they’re looking at.

What to expect

The confirmed line-up covers a good spread of Louth’s history. Carlingford Castle runs free guided tours on the weekends of 16-17 August and 23 August - the guides take you through the castle’s medieval past and the stories attached to its dramatic waterfront setting on Carlingford Lough. Old Mellifont Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery ever built in Ireland (founded 1142), offers guided tours with interpreters in 12th-century style dress who walk visitors through almost a thousand years of history and archaeology among the roofless stone ruins. Barmeath Castle and Gardens opens for a heritage open day - a walled estate near Dunleer that is rarely accessible to the public. At Oldbridge on the Boyne, costumed living history interpreters from Laoch Living History bring the 1690 Battle of the Boyne to life - musketeers, artillery gunners, blacksmiths, monks and soldiers, plus guided battlefield walks led by historian Tóla Collier for anyone who wants the full strategic picture. The full schedule, including exact times for each event, is published at heritageweek.ie in the weeks before the week begins. Some events require advance booking, so check before you travel.

Getting there

Drogheda is the natural base for Heritage Week in Louth. It sits on the M1 motorway, about 50 km north of Dublin, and is well served by Bus Éireann and Irish Rail on the Dublin-Belfast line - trains from Dublin Connolly take roughly 45 minutes. From Drogheda you can reach Oldbridge in about 10 minutes by car. Mellifont Abbey is roughly 15 minutes north-west on the R168. Carlingford is about 40 minutes north on the N1/R173, and Dunleer - for Barmeath - is about 20 minutes up the N1. Public transport to the individual heritage sites is limited, so a car or a taxi from Drogheda is the practical option for most of them. Parking is available at all the main sites.

While you’re in Drogheda

Drogheda itself has a strong heritage core - St Laurence Gate, the Millmount Fort, and the Boyne Viaduct are all worth a look while you’re passing through. There is more to see in Drogheda and across Co. Louth.
