Queen of the Castle Festival, Cahir

At Cahir Castle · Cahir, Co. Tipperary

Queen of the Castle Festival at Cahir Castle

The Queen of the Castle Festival is a four-day celebration of women, community, and culture, staged every August bank holiday weekend at Cahir Castle in south Tipperary. Founded in 2024 by Rathkeevin Macra, it has quickly found its footing as one of the more distinctive summer gatherings in the Munster calendar - part community festival, part competition showcase, all set against one of the most intact medieval castles in the country. If you want to catch live music, good food, and a bit of pageantry somewhere genuinely atmospheric, this is a strong weekend for it.

What to expect

At the core of the festival is the Queen of the Castle competition, in which Macra na Feirme members representing regions from across Ireland - and international representatives - take part in a showcase that runs across the weekend. The competition is open to Macra members only, but the wider festival programme around it is very much aimed at general audiences.

Across the four days you can expect live music performances, arts activities, talks, and family entertainment, all organised to make the most of the castle grounds as a backdrop. Food and dining are also a feature, with the social side of things being central to the Macra spirit. The exact programme for 2026 had not been published at time of writing, so check the festival website closer to the date for the full schedule. The organisers - the Cahir Social and Historical Society - have strong local roots and a track record of pulling it together well.

Cahir Castle itself is worth lingering around regardless. Sitting on a rocky island in the River Suir, it is managed by the Office of Public Works and is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Ireland. It has appeared in Excalibur, Barry Lyndon, and The Last Duel, so the setting needs no embellishment.

Getting there

Cahir sits on the N24, roughly 18km south of Tipperary town and about 20km north of Clonmel. From Cork city it is around 50 minutes on the M8 and N8. From Dublin, take the M7/M8 south - allow about two hours. Cahir is also served by Bus Eireann routes on the Waterford-Limerick corridor. The castle is in the centre of town; parking is available in the town square and along Church Street a short walk away.

While you’re in Cahir

The town has a fine Swiss Cottage a short drive out on the Ardfinnan road - an early 19th-century ornamental cottage designed by John Nash and well worth an hour. There is more to see in Cahir and across Co. Tipperary.
