Every summer Strokestown Library runs free arts and crafts sessions for children, giving kids a structured creative outlet during the long school holidays. Run by the Roscommon County Library Service, these weekly workshops are a reliable fixture on the mid-summer calendar - low-key, free, and genuinely useful for families who want something worthwhile to do on an ordinary Tuesday or Friday afternoon. The sessions suit children aged roughly 5 to 12, and the materials are provided, so there is nothing to bring and nothing to pay.
Each session has a different project: one week it might be painting, the next collage, papier mache or something made with natural materials gathered from outside. The library keeps the groups small enough that children get proper help from the librarian or a facilitator, rather than being left to muddle along in a crowd. Finished pieces go home with the child, which is half the appeal. The pace is relaxed and unhurried - more afternoon workshop than structured class - and children who are a bit shy around arts and crafts tend to warm up quickly once a project is in front of them. Because sessions run throughout June, July, and into August, there is no pressure to catch a single date; if one week does not work for the family, there will be another.
Strokestown sits on the N5, roughly 23km east of Roscommon town and about 150km west of Dublin. If you are coming from Roscommon town, it is a straight run east on the N5 in around 20 minutes. From Longford town it is a similar distance heading west. Bus Eireann serves the Strokestown corridor on routes between Dublin and Westport, with stops in the village. The library is a short walk from wherever you alight in the village centre. Strokestown itself is a planned estate town with a wide Georgian main street and easy on-street parking throughout.
