Roscommon Mart has been trading livestock on the edge of Roscommon town for around 66 years, and it still runs four separate sale days a week rather than concentrating everything into one. Weanlings go through the ring on Tuesdays, lambs and cast ewes on Wednesdays, bullocks, heifers and dry cows on Fridays, and, from August through October, breeding ewes and hoggets on Saturdays. It is one of the few marts left in the west still running this many weekly sales, and it remains a genuine meeting point for farming families from right across the county.
Sale day starts early, with trailers and box lorries queuing from before 9am and pens filling well before each ring opens. Farmers can bid in person at ringside or log on through the MartEye app to buy and sell remotely, widening the buyer base beyond Roscommon. Livestock sold through the mart carries Bord Bia quality assurance and Department of Agriculture blue-card approval where applicable, adding a premium of 20 to 30 cent per kilo for qualifying animals. Around six full-time and twenty part-time staff keep the yard running, and the on-site canteen is as much a part of the day as the ring, a place where older farmers pass on advice to younger ones over a cup of tea between lots.
Roscommon Mart is at Ardsallagh More on the edge of Roscommon town, a short drive from the N61 and N63 junctions that meet in the town. There is yard parking for cars and trailers, though it fills quickly on the busiest sale days, particularly the Friday cattle sales when several hundred animals can go through the ring.
