At Community Centre, Creaton's Loughglynn, The Village Inn · Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon
The Loughglynn Music Festival is one of those August Bank Holiday weekends that a whole community builds itself around. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, this three-day festival in a small County Roscommon village pulls in live showband acts, dancing, and the annual crowning of the Queen of the Woodlands - a centrepiece competition that draws participants and supporters from well beyond the parish. If you enjoy a proper country music weekend, real dancing on a proper floor, and the kind of atmosphere that only comes from a village doing something it genuinely loves, this is worth the drive.
Entertainment runs across three venues in the village: the Community Centre, Creaton’s Loughglynn pub, and The Village Inn. Showband acts perform across the weekend, with the Queen of the Woodlands competition typically taking centre stage on the Saturday evening. The festival is a community fundraiser for local amenities, so the money stays in the village, and the welcome that comes with that is easy to feel. Expect dancing that goes late into the night and a good mix of ages - showband culture in the west of Ireland runs across generations, and Loughglynn does it properly. Prices vary depending on the event, so check the Facebook page (Loughglynn Fest) for the current programme.
Loughglynn sits on the R325, roughly midway between Castlerea and Ballaghaderreen in the north of County Roscommon. From Dublin, take the M6 west and pick up the N60 or N5 past Roscommon town; from Galway, the N63 north connects well. The village is small, and parking is available at each festival venue, though spaces fill up on the Saturday evening. There is no scheduled bus service to Loughglynn, so you will need a car or need to arrange a lift from Castlerea or Ballaghaderreen, both of which are served by Bus Eireann from Dublin and Galway.
Loughglynn sits in an easy reach of some fine county scenery - the village itself is surrounded by six small lakes, giving it its name. There is more to see in Roscommon and across Co. Roscommon.
