Roscommon Tidy Towns Community Activities

At Roscommon Town · Roscommon, Co. Roscommon

Roscommon Tidy Towns volunteers at work in the town

Roscommon Tidy Towns is one of the county’s longest-running volunteer groups, entering the town in the 2026 SuperValu TidyTowns competition alongside more than 900 groups nationwide. Every year, the group submits a detailed application listing its projects for the season and a map to guide the judges, who arrive unannounced at some point during the summer to assess the town’s appearance on the day of their visit. The group has a strong record in the national competition, having previously taken a gold medal standard, and regularly thanks locals for supporting church gate collections that fund its work.

What to expect

Volunteers meet regularly through the summer for hands-on work around the town, from planting containers on the square to general clean-ups and upkeep of public spaces, with recent sessions including planting work carried out with the help of local volunteers. The group also takes part in National Spring Clean, Ireland’s largest anti-litter campaign, which runs each April and invites individuals, schools and community groups to organise local clean-ups. Outside of organised workdays, the committee runs periodic church gate collections to fund plants, tools and other town-improvement costs, and posts updates and calls for volunteers on its Facebook page. No experience is needed to get involved, and new volunteers of any age are welcome to turn up to a session or get in touch beforehand.

Getting there

Roscommon Tidy Towns activities take place in and around Roscommon town, which sits at the crossroads of the N60 and N61 in the centre of the county, with Bus Éireann services from Dublin, Galway and Athlone and a railway station on the Dublin to Westport line. Meeting points for workdays are announced on the group’s Facebook page.
