At The Spirit Store · Georges Quay, Dundalk, Co. Louth, A91 NR79
El Clash Combo have been playing The Clash’s music live since 2005, making them Ireland’s longest-running and most road-tested tribute to Joe Strummer’s band. On 31 July they bring their set to the Spirit Store on Georges Quay, Dundalk - a proper night out for anyone who grew up with London Calling on the turntable, and a decent introduction for those who discovered the band later. The set pulls from all five studio albums plus singles and B-sides, so it is not a greatest-hits-only run-through.
El Clash Combo - Bokker, Macker, Dave and Sean - are experienced musicians who treat the material seriously. Their stated aim is to “revive the passion, energy and music of The Clash,” and the live recordings bear that out: loud, direct and fast-moving. Expect London Calling, Should I Stay or Should I Go, Rock the Casbah, White Riot and the deeper cuts that Clash fans actually want to hear. The Spirit Store is a compact, standing-room venue, which suits this kind of music far better than a seated theatre would. Doors open at 7:30pm.
The Spirit Store itself is one of Dundalk’s better-known live music rooms - a bar and venue on the quayside that runs food from the A91 kitchen Wednesday through Sunday, so you can eat early before the doors open. The crowd at events like this tends to be a mixed age: older fans who saw The Clash first time around alongside younger ones who came in through compilations or film soundtracks.
Dundalk sits on the main Dublin - Belfast corridor, about 85km north of Dublin and 90km south of Belfast on the M1. By road it is roughly 50 minutes from Dublin and a similar distance from the border. Georges Quay is near the town centre, close to the Dundalk railway station - Enterprise services run between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Central and stop at Dundalk. Buses on the Dublin Coach and Bus Eireann routes also serve the town. Street parking is available around the quay area in the evening.
Dundalk is the main town in Louth and has a decent amount to occupy the afternoon before a gig - the town centre, the Louth County Museum and a walk along the quays are all close to the Spirit Store. There is more to see in Dundalk and across Co. Louth.
