A week-long introduction to stop-motion animation for children aged 8 to 12, this summer camp at Nenagh Arts Centre gives young people a proper grounding in one of the most tactile and satisfying forms of filmmaking there is. Over five afternoons, participants move from blank page to finished short film - building their own sets, crafting characters, shooting frame by frame, and seeing it all come to life on screen. It suits kids who like making things with their hands as much as those who are drawn to technology or storytelling, and no previous experience is needed.
The camp runs in small groups, which means children get hands-on time with equipment rather than watching from the back of a room. Participants learn the fundamentals - how to plan a scene, how to move characters in tiny increments, how to control lighting and keep continuity between shots. They work in teams, which builds a natural sense of collaboration and usually results in more ambitious little films than any single child would attempt alone.
Nenagh Arts Centre has run animation camps before, and the format is well-established: the week builds towards a completed short film that each participant takes home. Materials and equipment are provided, and a certificate of completion is included. The centre is at Banba Square in the middle of Nenagh town, a manageable and well-resourced venue with experience hosting youth programming across visual art, theatre, and music.
Nenagh is the main town in north Tipperary, roughly equidistant from Limerick (about 40 minutes) and Portlaoise (about 55 minutes) on the M7. From Dublin the drive is about an hour and forty minutes via the M7. Bus Eireann serves Nenagh from Limerick, Dublin, and Portlaoise, with the bus stop in the town centre a short walk from Banba Square. Parking is available in the town centre, with spaces along Banba Square itself and in nearby car parks off Kickham Street.
