Art of Play - Afternoon Art Session for Kids

At Strule Arts Centre · Townhall Square, Omagh, Co. Tyrone BT78 1BL

Children doing afternoon art activities at Strule Arts Centre

A full week of afternoon art-making at Strule Arts Centre in Omagh, running 10 to 14 August 2026 for children aged 7 to 11. Art of Play is the kind of summer programme that gives kids something to actually do with the long August afternoons - hands-on, creative, and run by the team behind one of the best arts venues in the north-west. If you have a child who likes making things and finds two weeks of screen time plenty enough, this is a good week for them.

What to expect

The afternoon art sessions run Monday through Friday, with children working across a range of creative activities over the five days. Strule Arts Centre runs a full summer workshop calendar in August, and Art of Play sits alongside other hands-on sessions including ceramics, environmental art, and comic-art masterclasses - so the programme is a genuine creative environment, not a crèche with crayons.

Children attend as part of a group, with tuition led by the centre’s regular workshop team in a proper arts-centre setting. The sessions are structured enough to build on each day, while being relaxed enough for younger participants to find their feet. For families who want to add movement into the mix, morning dance sessions (10am to 12pm) run alongside the afternoon art track during the same week - the two programmes are bookable separately.

Places are limited and fill up, so booking ahead through the Strule Arts Centre box office is advisable.

Getting there

Omagh sits on the A5 road roughly 50 kilometres south of Derry/Londonderry and about 80 kilometres from Belfast via the A4. The town is well connected by bus - Translink Ulsterbus runs regular services from Belfast Europa Bus Centre and from Derry, with the journey from Belfast taking around two hours. The bus station in Omagh is a short walk from the town centre.

Strule Arts Centre is on Townhall Square, right in the middle of Omagh. There are several pay-and-display car parks within a few minutes’ walk, including spaces off High Street and Bridge Street. The venue itself does not have its own car park.

While you’re in Omagh

The town has a decent selection of cafés and independent shops worth a look if you are waiting out the afternoon session or have older children with you. The Ulster American Folk Park, one of the best open-air museums in Ireland, is a few kilometres north of the town and makes a natural half-day companion to a visit. There is more to see in Omagh and across Co. Tyrone.
