Summer Schemes, Camps and Activities

At Multiple venues - Cookstown, Dungannon, Greenvale Leisure Centres · Cookstown, Dungannon, and Greenvale, Co. Tyrone

Children at summer schemes and camps

Mid Ulster District Council runs one of the most popular summer programmes in the north, and the 2026 edition brings the full scheme back to Cookstown, Dungannon, and Greenvale Leisure Centres across four weeks in July and August. If you have a child aged 5 to 11 and need structured, supervised activity through the school holidays, this is the practical answer - full days from 10am to 3pm, run by the council’s leisure staff in proper sports facilities. It suits working parents and children who want more than screen time in equal measure.

What to expect

The summer schemes offer a mix of games, sports, arts and crafts, and general leisure activities pitched at primary-school-aged children. Cookstown Leisure Centre on Burn Road is one of the largest in the province and has the space to back it up - two swimming pools (including a learner pool with a flume), a children’s soft play area, and a fitness studio. On top of the standard schemes, Mid Ulster runs specialist Get Active Summer Camps in golf, gymnastics, canoeing, angling, and tennis at various venues, so if a child has a particular interest, it is worth checking what is scheduled at each site. There is also a dedicated Neurodivergent Club designed to let children with neurodivergent needs take part at their own pace - contact the centre directly for details on that strand. Booking is through the council’s online Leisure Hub and numbers are limited, so registering early is worth doing before the best slots fill.

Getting there

Cookstown sits roughly in the centre of Co. Tyrone, about 50 km south-west of Belfast on the A29. By car from Belfast, take the M1 west to junction 14, then the A29 north into town - around 45 to 50 minutes. From Derry, the A6 east to Maghera then the B40 south is the usual route, about 50 minutes. Cookstown Leisure Centre is on Burn Road on the south side of town and has on-site car parking. Translink Ulsterbus serves Cookstown from Belfast Europa and from Dungannon, though schedules are worth checking in advance on the Translink website for the exact day.

While you’re in Cookstown

Cookstown is known for its unusually long and wide main street - said to be one of the longest in Ireland - and there are independent shops, cafes, and takeaways along it for an after-camp pick-up. The wider area takes in Lough Neagh to the east, Beaghmore Stone Circles nearby, and good walking in the Sperrin foothills. There is more to see in Cookstown and across Co. Tyrone.
