At Strule Arts Centre · Townhall Square, Omagh, Co. Tyrone BT78 1BL
A morning at the cinema can be a genuinely lovely outing, and this screening of Little Women at Strule Arts Centre is designed to make it as comfortable and welcoming as possible - for people living with dementia and for the family members and carers who come with them. The 2019 Greta Gerwig adaptation brings Louisa May Alcott’s four March sisters to life with warmth and colour, following Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy as they come of age in 19th-century Massachusetts. It is a PG-rated film that runs for two hours and fifteen minutes, and the tone throughout the morning is unhurried.
Strule Arts Centre has been running its Dementia Friendly Film series as part of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s commitment to inclusive arts, with staff trained in dementia awareness and practical adjustments made to each screening. The house lights are kept slightly raised, the sound levels are softer than a standard cinema showing, and the audience norms are relaxed - there is no expectation of sitting quietly through everything, and people can move as they need to.
The film begins at 11am. After the credits, there is an option to stay on for lunch in the Strule Café: homemade soup with sandwiches, tea, coffee and biscuits. If you are coming with someone who would benefit from a slower, social morning rather than a rush to get home, the lunch package makes the outing feel more like an occasion. Tickets are non-refundable once booked.
