At Armagh County Museum · The Mall East, Armagh, Co. Armagh, BT61 9BE
Each summer, the members of Armagh Art Club take over one of Ireland’s oldest county museums for a show that has been running for over 40 years. The Armagh Art Club Summer Exhibition fills Armagh County Museum with original paintings and prints made by local artists, spanning landscapes, portraiture, and everything in between. It is free to attend, open to all, and the works are for sale - so it suits anyone from a casual Sunday visitor to someone genuinely looking to buy original art from a community that has been active in the city for over 60 years.
The exhibition runs from early July through to early September, giving you a good stretch of the summer to drop in at a pace that suits. The show is selected from Armagh Art Club’s membership and the range is broad - you might find tightly rendered Armagh landscapes alongside looser, more expressive pieces, and the mix of styles tends to reflect a club where experience levels vary widely. The annual prize giving ceremony takes place during the run, which adds a moment of occasion to what is otherwise an unhurried, informal exhibition. Because the venue is a working museum with permanent galleries covering archaeology, natural history, and local history, you can take in the full building on a single visit. The museum also acts as Armagh’s Visitor Information Centre, so if you want tips on what else to do in the city, the staff there are well placed to help.
Armagh is well connected by road from Belfast (about 45 minutes via the M1), from Dublin (roughly two hours via the A3/N2), and from Newry (around 30 minutes on the A28). The museum sits on The Mall East, a wide Georgian tree-lined promenade right in the centre of the city. Parking is available along The Mall itself and there are public car parks a short walk away in the city centre. There is no dedicated rail link to Armagh, but Translink operates bus services from Belfast and other nearby towns, with stops in the city centre a short walk from The Mall.
The Mall is one of the finest Georgian public spaces in Ireland and the museum is just one of several things to see along its edges. The two Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic cathedrals that crown the city’s twin hills are worth the climb in either direction. There is more to see in Armagh and across Co. Armagh.
