At Ballinagh Community Centre · Ballinagh, Co. Cavan
A free afternoon of amateur boxing in a proper community setting - this is the kind of event that reminds you how much life exists outside the county town. Cavan Amateur Boxing Club, which relaunched in Ballinagh in late 2025, holds regular showcase events at Ballinagh Community Centre, drawing visiting clubs from across the country to face a combined Cavan Select team made up of fighters from Cavan ABC and Virginia Boxing Club. If you have never watched amateur boxing live, this is a low-stakes, welcoming way to start: no cover charge, a relaxed crowd, and bouts that range from first-timers having their debut outing to more experienced club members putting on a show.
The format follows the club’s established showcase pattern. Exhibition bouts for newer fighters come first - these are boxers who have trained for months and are stepping into competition for the first time ahead of upcoming tournaments like the Mid-Ulsters. Then the card moves to more experienced fighters, including some club stalwarts. Visiting clubs from counties including Antrim, Galway and Meath have featured at previous showcases, so the opposition is varied. The club’s trainer Stephen Flynn has been deliberate about the atmosphere: “We’re going to try to make it an event, a bit of music, the whole lot, make it feel like a big event for the lads, to put on a real good exhibition like you would a pro-show.” Past events have also featured promising talents like Stephen McDonagh - Mid-Ulster and Ulster title holder - and Porto International Box Cup winner Kenia Prado. The July card will follow the same spirit. Admission is free.
Ballinagh is a small village on the N55, roughly 10km south-west of Cavan town. From Cavan town, take the N55 heading south-west and follow it through the village - the community centre is the main public building in Ballinagh and straightforward to find. Parking is available on-site and on the road nearby; space should be adequate for a club event of this size. Bus Eireann serves the wider Cavan area but Ballinagh itself has limited public transport, so driving or a lift is the practical option for most people.
Cavan town is a short drive away and worth pairing with the trip - the Market House area, the Cavan County Museum in Ballyjamesduff, and the Lakelands landscape on the town’s doorstep all merit time. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
