Cavan Senior Football Club Championship 2026

Gaelic football match in County Cavan

The Cavan Senior Football Club Championship is one of the county’s great sporting occasions - a summer and autumn competition that runs from July through to an October final and draws genuine passion from every corner of Co. Cavan. This is club football at its most local: neighbours in the stand, farmers in county jerseys, and players who trained together since underage now going head-to-head for the Oliver Plunkett Cup. If you want to watch Gaelic football in an atmosphere that feels nothing like a neutral fixture, this is the place to start.

What to expect

Twelve clubs compete for the Kyte Powertech Senior Football Championship under a single unseeded league table. Each side plays four games in the league stage, with the top eight progressing to quarter-finals and the bottom four dropping into a relegation playoff. The knockout stages run through September, with semi-finals and the final held at Kingspan Breffni in Cavan town.

The defending champions are Crosserlough, who are powered by Paddy Lynch - Cavan’s standout attacker and one of the most prolific scorers in the National League in 2025. Gowna, three-in-a-row winners before being halted by Crosserlough, are managed by former Monaghan senior boss Vinny Corey and are expected to push hard for a return to the top. Ramor United won the county league and arrive with momentum after a four-year drought. Kingscourt Stars, Castlerahan, Cavan Gaels, and Arva round out the sides most likely to feature at the business end.

League stage games are played at club grounds throughout the county - tight, atmospheric venues where you are within twenty metres of the action. Admission is typically around €5 at the gate, cash is usually accepted, and the quality of football can be surprisingly high given the county’s tradition of producing inter-county footballers.

Getting there

Cavan town sits roughly 115 km north-west of Dublin on the N3 and is easily driven in under two hours. From Belfast the journey on the A3/N54 takes around an hour and a quarter. There is no rail service to Cavan town; Bus Eireann routes connect from Dublin (Busaras) and Monaghan. For club-ground fixtures around the county, a car is the practical option as many venues are in rural townlands.

Parking at club grounds is almost always free and on-site or roadside. At Kingspan Breffni, street parking is available around the ground and in the town centre a short walk away.

While you’re in Cavan

Cavan town itself is a useful base - compact, with a good range of cafes, pubs, and restaurants along Main Street and the surrounding streets. The Cavan Burren and Killykeen Forest Park are close by for anyone who wants to add a walk to the day. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
