At Cavan International Equestrian Centre · Latt, Cavan, H12 X9K1, Co. Cavan
The Cavan Home Pony International is one of the most keenly contested pony show jumping events on the Irish calendar. Held over four days each July at Cavan International Equestrian Centre, it draws young riders and their ponies from across Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales to compete in classes spanning Debut level right up to 148cm. If you have a child who rides, or simply enjoy watching sharp turns, tight distances and the particular tension of a double clear, this is a very good place to spend a summer afternoon.
Competition runs across the four days in height categories - 128cm, 138cm and 148cm - as well as Debut classes for less experienced combinations. Each height division has its own knockout rounds building towards a final, so there is always a class in the ring from morning through to late afternoon. The standard is high: riders who place here are typically competing at the top end of their age group nationally, and many have come over from Britain specifically for this show.
Cavan Equestrian Centre has indoor and outdoor arenas, so the schedule can keep moving whatever the weather. There is a café on site and equestrian retail on the premises, meaning you can spend several hours without leaving the grounds. Stabling fills fast - the venue caps entries strictly - but spectators do not need to book in advance.
Cavan town sits roughly 110km north-west of Dublin, a straightforward drive up the N3 / M3. From Dublin Airport the journey is under 90 minutes in clear traffic. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin to Cavan town. The equestrian centre is at Latt, on the outskirts of Cavan, signposted from the N3. There is a large on-site car park and the approach road is well used to horse lorries, so arrival is easy.
Co. Cavan is lake country - the Shannon rises here and the county holds over 360 lakes. Cavan town itself has a good handful of pubs and places to eat, and the surrounding drumlin landscape is worth a slow drive if you have extra time. There is more to see in Cavan and across Co. Cavan.
