Inside the Gate: Open Farm Event at Gerry Fitzsimons' Farm

Gerry Fitzsimons opens the gate of his organic beef farm at Kilcogy, near Mullahoran, on Sunday 30 August 2026, as one of the farms taking part in Farming For Nature’s national Inside the Gate day. The event runs from 2pm to 5pm and gives families a chance to walk a working organic farm and see, close up, how a shift away from conventional farming has let nature come back into the fields.

What to expect

Visitors meet Gerry on the farm and are shown around the grass-fed system, with its mix of diverse pastures, native birch woodland and low-input grazing. Along the way there is seasonal picking of blackberries and apples, a look at the farm animals, and a chance to see vintage tractors and hay machinery on display. The farm also has two wildlife ponds and a wildflower meadow, with talk of the trees, hedges and habitats that support them. It is a hands-on, outdoor afternoon that works well for children who like animals and the outdoors, and it is one of a number of farms opening their gates around the country on the same day as part of the same Farming For Nature initiative. The programme’s own framing is that every farm and every landscape is different, so each host farm on the day offers a different walk and a different story.
