Club football in Cavan runs deep, and the Intermediate grade is where ambition shows in its rawest form. The clubs chasing the O’Reilly Precast Cavan Intermediate Football Championship in 2026 are playing for county silverware and, more valuable still, promotion to Senior for the following season. Round 2 sends Cootehill Celtic to Kingspan Breffni to face Searcog/Shercock on Friday, 24 July, one of several fixtures that week as the group phase gathers pace across the county.
Round 2 alone is spread across several venues and two evenings. On Thursday 23 July, Bailieborough met Cnoc Bride at Kingspan Breffni. On Friday 24 July, Cootehill Celtic host Searcog/Shercock at the same ground from 7:45pm, while Cornafean take on Denn at Ballinagh GAA Grounds. Games at club grounds are tight, local affairs, close enough to hear the sideline calls; fixtures that reach Kingspan Breffni, the county ground on Park Lane with a capacity of around 25,000 and floodlights, take on a bigger occasion feel. The competition draws clubs from across the county who are not competing at Senior level, and the eventual winner earns promotion to the Senior Football Championship as well as a route into the Ulster Intermediate Club Championship. Cavan town sits around an hour and twenty minutes from Dublin on the N3/M3, and about an hour from Belfast via the A509. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin Busaras to Cavan town. Kingspan Breffni is on Park Lane south of the town centre, with parking nearby. Club grounds elsewhere in the county are smaller and rural, where the local church is often the best landmark.
Cavan town is the natural base for following the championship, with the market square, canal walks and Cavan Crystal all close to Kingspan Breffni.
