Cavan town was the first Gaelic medieval town in Ireland, founded by the O’Reilly clan, and has a rich heritage that the Walking History project presents through QR codes at key sites and a companion website. The route starts at the Diamond in the town centre and takes in the historic Town Hall (built 1910, designed by William Alphonsus Scott in Arts and Crafts style), the site of St Mary’s Franciscan Friary founded around 1300, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the former courthouse, and other landmarks.
This is a self-guided experience available at any time, not a scheduled event. It is suitable for visitors and locals alike and can be done at your own pace in approximately 90 minutes.
