What to Expect

“Happiness Then” is a comedy drama by Elizabeth Moynihan centred on two estranged sisters, Bridget and Frances, who meet again for the first time since their mother’s death. Directed by Liam Halligan, the play follows the pair as they bicker over everything from the wine to the will, working back through old loves, old losses and old grievances with sharp wit and cutting put downs, before deciding whether they can rebuild what is left of their relationship, with each other and with the people around them. The play has previously been staged at Bewley’s Cafe Theatre and the Viking Theatre in Dublin, where reviewers praised it as sharp and sophisticated and noted Moynihan’s strong sense of contemporary Irish family life. The two hander format puts the entire weight of the evening on its lead performers, and the piece has built its reputation on studio sized stages rather than large houses, which suits Droichead’s own intimate theatre space. The Drogheda date brings the production to Louth audiences as part of the venue’s Theatre Club season, after it has already built a strong reputation on the Dublin fringe and studio theatre circuit.

Getting There

Droichead Arts Centre is on Stockwell Street in Drogheda town centre, next to the Municipal Centre and library, an easy walk from the bus and rail stations. Drogheda sits just off the M1 motorway about 50km north of Dublin, with Enterprise and commuter rail services from Dublin Connolly taking roughly 45 minutes.
