Portarlington Library opens its doors early on Friday mornings for a weekly knitting group open to every skill level, from complete beginners to people who have knitted for decades. The next session falls on 7 August 2026. It is one of a handful of craft and social groups the library runs through the week, alongside a puzzle club and a baby book club, and it costs nothing to take part. Bring your own wool and needles and a project, finished or otherwise, and expect to leave having talked as much as knitted.
The group meets in the library for about an hour and a half each Friday, working on individual projects in a shared space rather than following a class or pattern set by a tutor. More experienced knitters typically help beginners with techniques on request, and the library describes it as welcoming to all skill levels. It is not a formal class, so there is no fee and no set curriculum, just a standing weekly slot for anyone who wants company while they knit. Sessions like this have become a regular part of the library’s weekly programme across Laois, with comparable knitting or sewing groups running in several other branches on different days.
