Nenagh Cattle Mart Tuesday Sale

At Nenagh Mart · Stafford Street, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary

Nenagh Cattle Mart Tuesday sale

Every Tuesday morning, Nenagh Mart on Stafford Street comes alive well before most of the town has had its first cup of tea. This is one of the enduring weekly rhythms of North Tipperary - a working livestock sale that has been part of the farming calendar here since the mart opened in 1957. If you have a connection to farming, an interest in rural Ireland, or just want to see how a proper country mart works, this is the genuine article. Buyers and sellers from across Munster and beyond converge for business conducted at pace.

What to expect

Bidding starts at 8.00am sharp, so early rising is non-negotiable. The ring sees store cattle, weanlings, breeding stock and finished cattle pass through in quick succession, with auctioneers keeping the pace brisk. Factory agents and independent feedlot buyers compete alongside local farmers, and the clearance rate tends to be strong - a reflection of the mart’s standing in the region. Nenagh Mart operates as part of Central Auctions Co-Operative Marts, alongside Birr and Roscrea, and together they serve a catchment that extends well beyond North Tipperary. Throughput varies week to week with seasonal demand - summer sales tend to bring a healthy run of store cattle as farmers adjust stock after the grazing season. The atmosphere is practical rather than touristic: short conversations, prices called fast, proceedings moving on.

Getting there

Nenagh sits on the N7 between Limerick and Dublin, roughly halfway along the route, making it straightforward to reach by car from most parts of Munster or the Midlands. From Limerick it is about 35 minutes; from Dublin, around 90 minutes. The mart is on Stafford Street, close to the town centre, and parking is available at the site. Bus Eireann serves Nenagh on the Limerick to Dublin route, with stops in the town, though given the 8.00am start time, getting there on public transport will require planning ahead - check current timetables before travelling.

While you’re in Nenagh

The sale wraps up in the morning, leaving the afternoon free. Nenagh Castle, a 13th-century cylindrical keep, is one of the better-preserved Norman towers in the country and well worth the climb. Lough Derg is only a short drive south and offers a very different pace - fishing, walking, or simply watching the water. There is more to see in Nenagh and across Co. Tipperary.
