At Elphin Day Centre Polytunnel · Elphin Day Centre, Elphin, Co. Roscommon
Elphin Tidy Towns volunteers meet every Saturday morning at the day centre polytunnel in the town, keeping up a steady programme of planting and upkeep work that has recently been backed by church gate collections raising over €500 for the group. It is one of a run of standing community fixtures in the Elphin area, alongside weekly bingo, a Kiltrustan clothing collection and the parish’s mobile library visit, and the group has thanked the wider community for its support and lots of positive comments about the improvements around the town.
Volunteers gather at 10:30am each Saturday to work on planting, maintenance and general tidying, using the polytunnel at the day centre as a base for growing plants used around Elphin. The work is hands-on and informal, suited to anyone with an hour or two spare on a Saturday morning rather than a set skill level, and new volunteers are always welcome to turn up. The group also runs periodic fundraising collections to cover the cost of plants, tools and other materials, and its work has been recognised locally as part of the wider Elphin community’s efforts.
Elphin Day Centre is in the centre of Elphin town in north County Roscommon, close to the community centre and church, and reached by local road via the R368. Parking is available near the day centre, and volunteers arriving by car can generally leave straight from a Saturday morning shopping trip in the town.
Elphin’s shops and church are a short walk from the day centre, and the town makes a good stop before exploring the wider Arigna Valley or the rest of Co. Roscommon. The group’s church gate collections and workdays sit alongside a weekly bingo night and other community fixtures that keep the small town active through the week.
